Prepare Plastic Bags for Emergencies (3) #94

How to use plastic bags in an emergency?

Do I need to buy new plastic bags?

Are these bags only for emergencies?

Is it complicated?

Do you know how beneficial it can be to have plastic bags in your home? Some people might think it’s too much trouble to collect a bunch of those plastic shopping bags you get from the stores. But sudden disasters do happen, and you won’t always have time to prepare everything that you’ll need. Plastic bags can help you a lot if you know how to use them in an emergency.

It’s OK to simply keep these ideas in mind. When you need to, you can do them.

What are plastic bags used for ?

Carrying water / Water storage / Cold-weather gear / First aid / Sanitation / Cooking / Lantern / Rope / etc.

Let’s continue where we left off with posts #92 and #93.
Here are some more emergency uses for plastic bags.

★ Lantern

Put a flashlight inside a plastic bag to diffuse the light. You’ve got an instant lampshade. (See post #70 for more information.)

★ Rope

One plastic shopping bag can make 4 m (12 feet) of rope. If you want to make a stronger rope, then double up or triple up your strands. My example below is made by twisting, but you can also use braids.

Pull the strands
tight.
Twist the individual
strands.
Twist the strands
together.
Twist new pieces
into each strand.

★ Temporary liquid storage

Of course, you can use your empty plastic bottle to store a little bit of water, but a large plastic bag can hold a lot more. How do you close it, securely? You can use the top of a plastic bottle and its cap with your plastic bag. It works for grains and dried goods too.

Even though my instructions call for a plastic bottle, you can use the cap from other
types of containers, too, like milk cartons, shampoo bottles, dish soap dispensers,
ketchup squeeze bottles, etc. Use your imagination!!

Please tune in next time for more about plastic bags. I will share how to cook with a plastic bag!!

See you next time
