Emergency Food Prep – How Much?

Emergency Stockpile Needs at Least Three Days of Meals. Why?

Prep 3 days of meals and water for your emergency stockpile.

Just 3 days? Is it enough?

If a disaster continues longer than 3 days, we might be in trouble.

Why 3 days?

I know this might sound a little scary, but do you know the survival rule of 3’s?

1. You can survive for 3 minutes without air.

2. You can survive for 3 hours in extreme heat or cold.

3. You can survive for 3 days without water.

4. You can survive for 3 weeks without food.

If you have ever taken a CPR class, you might know this rule. It’s important to know that this rule is just a rough estimate for adults.  Children, seniors, those with medical conditions, and people with special training might be have different survival times.

We can survive for 3 days without water

I would like to add my own rule of 3:  “You can carry 3 days of food and water without a big truck.”

This point is, in an emergency, if we’re lucky, we’ll be able to use a car;  but if not, we will probably be limited to 3 days, or less, of supplies. Following this survival rule of 3, we can decide what to prioritize and what can wait. We can survive for 3 weeks without food, meaning:  we don’t need to rush out and buy a lot of food, now.  Especially since I have lots of food in my fridge…  Oh, wait…

Oops…

I cleaned my fridge, recently.  I tidied it up a little too much…

Empty… empty… empty…

I used to teach my clients that it is best to keep your fridge 60% full.  The reasons for this included:  being able to find things, fridge cooling efficiency, and having space for surprise items (e.g, your dinner guest brings a cake).  But, lately I have been reconsidering this 60% recommendation, with a focus on emergency preparedness.  I still think 60% full is a good target, but make sure the food in your fridge is stuff you could actually use in an emergency (think cheese vs bbq sauce).

We can survive for 3 days without water, this one is more serious.

What does that mean?

“Get Water! “ 水を確保!!

Just 3 days. We’ll dive deeper into the subject of water, in a future post, but for the purposes of this exercise it’s enough for now to get any kind of water. When you have prepared 3 days of food and water, you will be surprised by how much space they take up.

Next time I will explain why 3 days of food is enough for now.

See you then.

Remember, “Protect your life by yourself” (自分の命は自分で守る). You need to survive first, and then you need your emergency supply.  No matter how well you prepared your emergency supplies, if you die, then all of your preparations will have been for nothing.  First and foremost, keep your health up all the time. Build your stamina so that if you need to, you can evacuate as quickly as possible.  Stay healthy

  1. Very interesting. My takeaway from this is that it’s more important to have emergency water than food because you can survive longer without food than you can without water.
