Common Emergency Stockpile Pitfalls #16

What should I be careful to avoid when setting up my emergency stockpile?

“I stock food supplies all over the house, even in the hallway….”

“I am a worrier… so I tend to buy a lot of stuff.”

“I am bad at managing my stockpiles…”

“I have a lot of food that I forgot about…”

It is not good to have too much food stored up in your home. Too much is never good, and overstocking can cause stress.

Common occurrences:

  • When you set up an emergency bag, you can not buy very much food because the bag has limited space.  But when you set up your home… your space seems unlimited.
  • When you hear or see the words “disaster” or ” crisis”, you tend to worry and rush to buy a lot of food.
  • You tend to buy similar-tasting foods.  And then you get bored eating the same flavors.
  • You think too much about nutritional balance, and you can not manage all of the food you bought.
  • You find a lot of old food in your home, which you had forgotten about.
  • When your food reaches its expiration date, you feel pressure to eat it as soon as possible.
  • Honestly, the more food I have stocked up, the more I stress out about it.  But I bought more food anyway…

Most stockpiles fail because the focus is entirely on the short-term store.

If you are good at managing your stockpile, you will be fine.  But some people are not good at it.  If you experienced failure setting up your emergency stockpile, the most likely reason is that you didn’t plan your short-term and long-term stockpiles, separately.  Most stockpiles fail because the focus is entirely on the short-term store.  The short-term stockpile does’t require long expiration dates.  And a common gotcha is to buy a wide variety of food items, which can then be very challenging to maintain;  rolling over the expired food and replacing it with fresh can be overwhelming.  Think about a box of crayons.  Have you ever  finished an entire box of crayons?  I never have.  I usually finish the black and red crayons first, and I buy new ones and add them to my old set.  The short-term stockpile is the same.  If you can find your favorite food which can be used for emergencies, it will be good!!  That is the best way.  And if you have many family members, you have to think about their favorite emergency food too.

When you buy emergency foods for the short-term stockpile, I strongly recommend that you pick up well balanced food that you like.

I will talk about the long-term stockpile next post.  Once you get the point of the long-term stockpile, you will be clear on how to set up your emergency stockpile, and you will understand why we need well-balanced food for the short-time stockpile.

See you next time!
