What is the first thing we need to do?
何を最初にすればいいの?
I want to start setting up my emergency stockpile quickly, inexpensively and without waste.
I don’t know where to start…
I have to go shopping immediately?
Emergency food looks gross..and my kids are picky eaters…
Everybody has these same concerns. Me too. But there is no time to lose. An emergency can happen any time. It might happen soon! We need to prepare now, and we need to act quickly. I will give you a small goal you can tackle right now.
The first goal is to set aside at least 3 days of meals and water per person. まずは一人三日分の食料ゲット
This is not our ultimate goal, but it is a good place to start. Baby steps. This is a short-term goal that we can accomplish immediately, to get us started preparing for a real emergency.
To get started, you need to understand your home situation.
1: Check your home to see how much food you have now.
• Refrigerator
• Pantry
• Garage
Imagine being without electricity for 3 days.
Very suddenly and totally unexpectedly, the power goes out.
And it stays out, for three whole days.
2: Check for food that does’t need electricity or water.
• Canned food
• Cereal
• Dried fruit or nuts
• Snack bars
• etc.
You have some of these foods in your home now. You probably didn’t buy them for an emergency, and you likely use them daily or on a regular basis.

Let’s try to build a routine to maintain this three-day supply, consuming items just before they expire, and replacing them. This is a good start!

We’re imagining a hypothetical situation to help us prepare, and in this imaginary scenario, you get to stay home. (Whew! That’s lucky.) Let’s assume that you can still use your gas stove, and you still have running water.
Electric cooktop? Sorry, you’re out of luck. There is no electricity!
And the more people you have in your family, the more food you’ll need.
Are you able to set aside enough food and water so that you and your family can survive a three-day blackout? Flashlights and candles might also prove helpful in this imaginary scenario, but they’re not essential. The goal is not to be comfortable, necessarily; the goal is to survive.
Don’t forget, this is not preparation for an evacuation. If we were planning for an evacuation, you would need to bring food and water with you. Could you carry three days of food and water and carry your kids too? Even a mere three days of food and water is probably too much to carry, so let’s keep things simple for now. Three days of food is enough to worry about for starters.
避難が必要になったら、三日分/人以上をもって逃げれるか?私なら無理です。
なので最低三日分からはじめます。
We’ll talk about evacuations in a future post. “Why three days?” you ask. I will explain next time!
See you then.
Remember, “Protect your life by yourself” (自分の命は自分で守る). You need to survive first, and then you need your emergency supply. No matter how well you prepared your emergency supplies, if you die, then all of your preparations will have been for nothing. First and foremost, keep your health up all the time. Build your stamina so that if you need to, you can evacuate as quickly as possible. Stay healthy
Generally I don’t read post on blogs, however I wish to say that this
write-up very compelled me to try and do it! Your writing taste has
been amazed me. Thanks, quite great article.
